New Dedicated Pessary Clinic

Here at Infiniti we have a dedicated Pessary clinic for both our current patients and new patients who think they may have a prolapse and after a consultation can experience ongoing care within the pessary clinic. We will also look after those patients who currently have a pessary and can provide a referral from their GP or healthcare provider..

What to expect at your Pessary appointment:

A pessary appointment involves a visit to our clinic in Cardiff Gate and either a nurse or consultant will assess, fit, and manage a vaginal pessary. A vaginal pessary is a medical device used to provide support for pelvic organ prolapse or other related conditions. Here’s what you can generally expect during a pessary appointment with us:

  1. Preparation and Assessment:
    • You may be asked to provide some medical history and information about your symptoms.
    • The healthcare provider will likely ask you about any discomfort, urinary or bowel issues, or pain you’ve been experiencing.
    • They may also inquire about your sexual activity and lifestyle factors that could influence the choice of pessary.
  2. Physical Examination:
    • A pelvic examination will be conducted to assess the severity and type of pelvic organ prolapse, the size of your vaginal canal, and the overall condition of your pelvic floor all in the presence of a chaperone.
    • The consultant/nurse may use a speculum to check your vagina and cervix.
  3. Pessary Fitting:
    • Based on the assessment, the consultant/nurse will choose the appropriate type and size of pessary that suits your anatomy and condition.
    • The pessary will be inserted into your vagina. Some pessaries need to be folded or compressed for insertion.
    • The provider will ensure that the pessary is positioned correctly and comfortably. You might be asked to stand up or move around to make sure it feels secure.
  4. Testing and Comfort Check:
    • You may be asked to cough, bear down, or move in certain ways to assess how the pessary functions and whether it stays in place during different activities.
    • The consultant/nurse will ensure that the pessary is not causing any discomfort or irritation.
  5. Education and Care Instructions:
    • The consultant/nurse will explain how to properly care for and clean the pessary. You’ll likely receive instructions on how often to remove and clean it.
    • If needed, you’ll be taught how to remove and reinsert the pessary, especially if you’re sexually active.
  6. Follow-Up Plan:
    • Depending on your condition and the type of pessary, we will schedule a follow-up appointment. This could range from a few weeks to a few months after the initial fitting for a pessary check and clean.
    • Follow-up appointments are important to ensure the pessary is effective and comfortable. Adjustments or a change in pessary type might be needed.
  7. Addressing Concerns:
    • You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions or express any concerns you might have about the pessary, its use, or its effects.

Remember that communication with us is key during the pessary appointment. Be open about your symptoms and any discomfort you might experience. If the pessary causes discomfort, pain, or irritation afterward, then we ask you to contact us straight away.
